Below are examples of bowls showing some of the variations in form, design, and tree species. Those that are turned from "green wood" (still wet from the functioning of the tree) will generally exhibit uneven rim height and in some cases quite extreme deformation, all of which comes about as a result of the shape changes caused by the differential shrinkage as the wood dries. As you will see below, some of the bowls are not round and do not have a horizontal rim because of the shrinkage process. Some woods are more subject to differential shrinking.
If you look carefully at the base of the bowls, you will see that some have three legs rather than a solid circular base. The legs of these "three-legged bowls" have been carved into the base after the turning is released from the lathe. Having just three points of contact helps keep the otherwise uneven base of the bowl stable. Some other bowls have no base component. They are simply formed to be round in continuity with the side profile. These are referred to as "round bottom bowls."
