Natural Edge Bowls are crafted so that the top rim of the bowl is the original surface of the tree. Thus you can see the bark and, in some cases, evidence of where limbs have changed the shape of the outer surface as they emerge from the trunk. Some trees have moss growing on the bark and that can be seen on some of the turnings below. In some cases, the bark will have been shed due to damage or degradation, but the edge is still the "natural" shape of that tree.
It can be a challenging geometry exercise to get the piece of the tree oriented on the lathe so that a pleasing undulation of the natural edge is exhibited. Also inexperienced turners have difficulty dealing with the undulating edge and fragile bark when the gouge first engages with the spinning piece of wood.
